pushing to eradicate our broken and racially biased criminal legal
system, defending freedom of speech, religion, and the right to
protest, or preserving the right to vote or the right to have an
abortion, the ACLU takes up the toughest civil liberties cases and
issues to defend all people from government abuse and overreach.
-Two critical components of our work are centering the voices of
impacted people and applying an anti-racist lens to all aspects of
our internal and external functions including but not limited to
recruitment and human resources, strategic planning, donor and
volunteer relations, Board and committee processes, and deciding
what cases to litigate. We are looking for candidates who share our

legislative advocacy, communications, and organizing strategies to
empower communities and achieve our objectives in major issue areas
including criminal law reform, racial justice, LGBTQIA+ equality,
reproductive freedom, and the rights of immigrants. With nearly
30,000 members and supporters across the state, the ACLU-NC has a
staff of more than 20 people with an office in Raleigh.The
OpportunityThe American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of North
Carolina seeks to hire a skilled multimedia communication
professional to plan and execute high-impact digital communications
products to increase engagement in and visibility of our work. The
ideal candidate will be creative, mission-focused, and
results-driven, using digital platforms and innovative tactics to
drive bold, consistent messaging across digital platforms that
align with the mission and values of the ACLU of North Carolina
(ACLU- NC).The Communications Strategist is a full-time, salaried,
and exempt position that will work out of our Raleigh or Charlotte
office as part of a collaborative Communications Department under
the supervision of the Director of Communications and in close
collaboration with the Legal and Policy & Advocacy Departments.
Some nights and weekend work required, as well as occasional travel
within the state.Key Job Responsibilities
- Develop strategies and tactics to advance the organization's
goals on various issues, including voting rights, racial justice,
reproductive justice, LGBTQIA+ equality, criminal legal system
reform, and more
- Provide support and assistance to the organization's internal
and external communications programs -
- Create and manage digital content including website articles,
advocacy emails, event pages, action alerts, online graphics, and
social media posts
- Plan, schedule, and implement a digital communications calendar
for website content, promotional emails, and social media
posts
- Create, maintain, and update online press distribution lists of
reporters and media outlets for press releases and media
advisories
- Provide communications support to ACLU-NC events, such as
online advertisements, promotional emails, graphic design creation,
in-person technical assistance, and real-time documentation via
photography and social media
- Collect, analyze, and report data from ACLU-NC digital
campaigns, such as social media engagement, email open rates,
website visits, and more
- Track and compile ACLU-NC news coverage and help monitor
breaking news coverage for civil rights and civil liberties
issues
- Assist with the drafting and design of written materials and
publications, such as newsletters, press releases, fact-sheets,
PowerPoint presentations, and more
- Other projects and duties as assignedTo Be Successful in This
Role, the Candidate Will Have
- Commitment to the mission of the ACLU-NC and the advancement of
civil liberties and civil rights in North Carolina
- At least two years of experience in digital communications,
journalism, marketing, public relations, or equivalent combination
of education and work experience
- Ability to work well within a team, often in a fast-paced work
environment under tight deadlines
- A commitment to diversity; a personal approach that values the
individual and respects differences of race, ethnicity, age, sex,
sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression, religion,
ability, and socio-economic circumstance
- A keen eye for graphic design and visual storytelling.
Photography experience is a plus with video production or editing
skills
- Excellent writing and editing skills
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva or similar graphic
design programs
- Experience creating and maintaining website and social media
content
- A valid North Carolina driver's license and reliable
transportationTo Stand Out from Others, You Will Have
- Working knowledge of HTML and experience coding emails and/or
web pages is a plus
- Knowledge and experience creating content for Drupal,
WordPress, and Squarespace websites is a plus
- Fluency in Spanish is a plus but not requiredWhat Else You

employer, and communication strategists are part of the union
bargaining unit. Salary and benefits are subject to a collective
