SALARY GRADE: Flat Rated

The North Carolina Court of Appeals seeks a qualified Clerk of Court to oversee the management of the Clerk's Office and supervision of the professional staff within the Clerk's Office. The Clerk manages the receipt and processing of all cases filed in the Court of Appeals and all non-judicial administrative support activities for the Court. The Clerk serves as the liaison between the Court, the legal community, and the public.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

* Ensure the efficient processing of cases filed with the Court. * Manage the processes involved in receiving and docketing petitions, motions, briefs, records, and all other papers filed with the Court. * Respond to public inquiries concerning Court policies, procedures, and the N.C. Rules of Appellate Procedure. * Ensure all staff members are trained in, and familiar with, Court policies, procedures, and rules. * Oversee the operations of oral argument sessions. * Compile and maintain case statistics and reporting systems to ensure appropriate caseload and Court performance assessments. * Provide support to the Chief Judge and other judges of the Court regarding complex issues on pending appeals.

The Clerk of Court reports to the Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals and supervises 8-10 employees.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of: N.C. General Statutes; N.C. Supreme Court and Court of Appeals case law; N.C. Rules of Appellate, Criminal, and Civil Procedure; appellate court practices; human resources policies and procedures; and budgets.

Skills in: staff management and supervision; interpersonal relations; problem solving; resource and time management; staff motivation; multitasking; attention to detail and organization; information system technologies; and effective oral and written communication.

Ability to: assign and monitor the work of staff; prepare and present speeches, presentations, and training sessions; and interact effectively with the public, judges, law clerks, executive assistants, practitioners, and county clerks of court.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school, an active license in good standing to practice law in North Carolina and ten (10) years of legal experience.

Management prefers applicants with: professional experience in development and implementation of policies and procedures to improve efficiency; experience in supervision of professional staff; executive or managerial experience; and experience in an appellate court environment.
