The Provost is the chief academic officer under the Chancellor and is responsible for review and approval of all academic programs and policies and the appointment, promotion, and compensation of the faculty.The Office of Faculty Affairs serves as the primary contact for NC State's policies, regulations, and rules that relate to faculty employment and evaluation, including the reappointment, promotion, tenure, and post-tenure review processes.The Office of Faculty Affairs also includes staff focused on faculty development (the Executive Director of Faculty Development reports to the Senior Vice Provost) and other units across NC State to support faculty development and leadership development programming for faculty at all stages of their careers, coordinates multiple faculty award processes within the university, and works with the Faculty Senate regarding faculty personnel policies and issues.Essential Job Duties:The overall role of the Associate Vice Provost will be to work with the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs and others in the Provost's Office to assure that specific policies, regulations, and rules related to faculty employment at NC State are consistent with the goals of the institution and are being implemented efficiently, fairly, and appropriately.This will include drafting or revising relevant policies in collaboration with the Senior Vice Provost and Provost Office team, the Faculty Senate, and other key constituents.The successful candidate will have an established record of success in leading the development, interpretation, and implementation of academic policies and processes at a large, complex institution. Demonstrated success in working productively and communicating effectively with faculty, academic leaders such as department heads and deans, academic administrative staff, and university staff in non-academic units (e.g., institutional research, human resources, information technology) is essential, as are excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to resolve questions or conflicts in a manner consistent with both existing policy and the principles of collaboration and shared governance.Specific duties of the Associate Vice Provost will include:

  • Offer and provide proactive consultation to departments and/or colleges regarding compliance, clarity, and flexibility of existing or proposed rules on reappointment, promotion and tenure, post-tenure review, and professorships.
  • Provide leadership for the post-tenure review reporting process for NC State, including consulting with colleges and departments on interpretations of the post-tenure review policy, creating and maintaining related resources for faculty and academic administrators, providing updates regarding the post-tenure review process to the Provost, and collecting and reporting institutional data to the UNC system.
  • Provide leadership for the Professors of Distinction policy and process for NC State, including working with the Office of University Advancement, college and department leadership, and the Provost to assure that new Professorships are established and filled appropriately, that appointments comply with UNC System Office, General Administration and NC State policies, and that reports regarding these Professorships are accurate.
  • Provide coordination for the Provost's comprehensive five-year review process for deans and vice provosts, including working with the Office of Institutional Strategy and Analysis on survey development and deployment, faculty committee coordination, and report development for these reviews.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact within the Provost's Office for implementation of regulations on scholarly reassignment, instructor qualifications, and supplemental pay, working with department heads and faculty members to facilitate their requests in these areas, answer questions, and ensure compliance with system and institution requirements.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact within the Provost's Office for the faculty phased retirement program, working with faculty members to develop phased retirement plans and working with University Human Resources to address questions or concerns related to the program.
  • Partner with University Human Resources on continuous process and/or policy improvement initiatives related to faculty, including recruitment, job waiver and background check processes, employee recognition, employee engagement, and the capture and reporting of faculty data in PeopleSoft.
  • Provide support to the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs in analysis and development of ad hoc surveys and reports on questions of interest regarding the faculty experience at NC State.
  • Assist the Vice Provost for Assessment and Accreditation with SACSCOC reporting related to faculty classification, number, sufficiency, and quality.
  • Serve as a backup to the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty and Academic Affairs and Assistant Vice Provost for Academic Affairs in support of the reappointment, promotion, and tenure (RPT) process, including answering questions related to the institution's RPT policies, regulations, and rules or researching individual cases as requested by the Provost or Vice Provost.Other Responsibilities:Perform other duties as assigned.Minimum Education and Experience:A doctoral degree and a minimum of five years of experience in higher education policy development and implementation, preferably in the area of academic or faculty affairs. Direct experience as a faculty member may substitute for some portion of the higher education policy experience.Other Required Qualifications:The successful candidate should possess a strong record of professional accomplishment and relevant administrative experience, and will also possess the following characteristics:
    • Ability to collaborate with faculty, administrators, and senior staff to develop, interpret, and implement policies and regulations in complex situations; ability to develop solutions that are faculty-centered, efficient, and consistent with existing policy in response to questions or problems that arise in a dynamic and academically diverse university setting;
    • A demonstrated commitment to shared governance principles in higher education policy development and implementation; strong communication and interpersonal skills; and
    • The ability to engage in independent decision-making.Preferred Qualifications:
      • Extensive familiarity with the University of North Carolina system and/or NC State policies and procedures is preferred.
