Job Location Department Ag & Resource Economics About the Department The Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics ( ARE ) serves consumers, producers, students, and others engaged in agricultural, natural resources and life science-related activities through teaching, research, and extension programs that address and solve economic, policy, legal and business problems. ARE's programs enhance decision making skills essential in the operation and management of businesses, households, nonprofits, government and other public organizations. ARE excels in all three of the university's core functions: teaching, research, and extension. The department is home to 35 faculty and staff, and it offers an undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Science) program in agribusiness management, two graduate programs: a Master of Arts in economics and a Ph.D. in economics, offered jointly with the Department of Economics, which is in the Poole College of Management, and several certificate programs. ARE is home to the Center for Environmental and Resource Economic Policy (CEnREP) which, among other notable programs and activities, annually hosts the nationally recognized 'Camp Resources'. In addition, ARE faculty lead many other prominent state and regional programs including The Executive Farm Management Program, and the Farm School. ARE has an active research program that is supported primarily by state and federal funds allocated through the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service. Other funds are provided by a variety of competitive federal, state, and foundation grants from the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation and the Tobacco Foundation. Agreements with state and federal agencies as well as with private firms provide additional funds for agricultural economics research activities. ARE sponsors several seminar series and events for faculty and students to share information and ideas. In conjuction with the Department of Economics, ARE offers several seminar series including those focused on: Agricultural, Trade and Development Economics, Econometrics, and Microeconomics. In addition, CEnREP hosts a regular colloquia, and partners with RTI International and Duke University to present the Triangle Resources and Environmental Economics Seminar Series. The department offers regularly scheduled workshops on agricultural economics, econometrics, natural resources and international trade. These workshop series constitutes an important component of the research activities of faculty and students. ARE faculty frequently collaborate with economists in the Department of Economics and in the College of Natural Resources, and engage in multi- and interdisciplinary research with scholars in an extensive range of other disciplines. The program is consistently ranked among the top 10 agricultural economics departments at public universities worldwide (RePEc/ IDEAS rankings). Agriculture and agribusiness - a core constituency of ARE's programs - contribute almost $100 billion annually to the state economy. ARE's programs are broad based, including traditional areas like agricultural production, marketing and policy, as well as environmental and natural resource issues and community development. ARE's extension programs reach all 100 counties in the state and have won numerous university, state, professional association, and national awards. Extension programs are implemented through a variety of methods, including workshops and seminars, media productions, and computer platforms. Extension programs are coordinated with other departments and programs. Faculty delivering extension education usually have two-way (research and extension) or sometimes three-way (teaching, research, and extension) appointments, thereby enabling them to accomplish objectives in an integrated fashion with the other responsibilities of ARE .
