About the Job
The Clinical Staff Pathologist applies knowledge of pathology, diagnostic medicine, and molecular genomics in support of FMI's mission to transform cancer care.--
The Pathologist is involved in all aspects of FMI's laboratory operations as related to a specimen journey through the laboratory. The pathologist duties could include the review of both tissue, blood and/or bone marrow samples submitted for clinical testing and research studies in conjunction with accompanying documentation received to ensure appropriateness for, and optimization of, molecular testing. The Pathologist may also be responsible for review of next-generation sequencing results and approval of genomic reports across FMI's portfolio of assays. The Pathologist also provides internal and external support and subject matter expertise to laboratory operations staff as well as to clients in line with professional licensure and experience.
This position is part-time (typically 24 hours per week on average) and may be assigned to work during any time that the laboratory is operational including evening and/or weekend hours.
Key Responsibilities


  • Participate in specimen review and optimization for all clinical, biopharma, and clinical trial testing performed at FMI including, but not limited to, FoundationOneCDx, FoundationOneHeme, and FoundationOneLiquid assays.
  • Review Hematoxylin and Eosin stained slides or Wright-Giemsa stained blood or marrow aspirate smears and its accompanying documentation in order to (1) determine specimen adequacy, (2) assign a tumor type and tumor nuclear percentage, and (3) optimize sample handling as needed prior to next-generation sequencing.
  • Function as an internal and external clinical consultant regarding the utility of Foundation Medicine assays including sample selection, test appropriateness, and interpretation of results.
  • Support lab operations and client services staff to resolve issues and technical inquiries.
  • Interact with the information technology teams to ensure appropriate functioning of software tools and integrity of clinical data and reports.
  • Maintain availability to work during times that the laboratory is operational including evening and/or weekend hours.

    Qualifications
    Basic Qualifications

    • Doctor of Medicine Degree
    • Active State Medical Licensure of laboratory location
    • Formal anatomic, clinical, and/or molecular pathology training--
    • American Board of Pathology - Anatomic Pathology Certification (For Anatomic - required)
    • American Board of Pathology - Molecular Genetic Pathology Certification (For Molecular-required)
    • 2+ years of experience in diagnostic pathology, biomedical research, or biotechnology after completion of clinical training
    • 2+ years of experience in diagnostic molecular pathology after completion of clinical training (For Molecular-required)

      Preferred Qualifications

      • 3+ years of experience interpreting and signing out molecular genetic pathology reports
      • 3+ years of experience evaluating histologic images
      • Anatomic or clinical pathology subspecialty training and/or expertise in cancer biology, genomics, or clinical trials
      • Strong history of achievement demonstrated by leadership activities, publications, presentations, or other activities
      • Demonstrated history of cross-functional leadership and/or participation in cross-functional teams
      • Demonstrated ability of meeting deadlines
      • Ability to work well under pressure while maintaining a professional demeanor
      • Ability to self-organize and operate effectively without day-to-day oversight, while staying tightly connected to key leaders and teams across the collaborations
      • Collaboration skills and the ability to effectively communicate (written and oral) with internal and external team members on project activities
      • Process-oriented, flexible mindset, and approach to creative problem solving
      • Understanding of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the importance of patient data privacy
