Job Description

The Compensation Manager is responsible for leading compensation initiatives and consulting with management and HR regarding compensation practices and policies. Duties will include planning, developing, and implementing new and revised compensation programs, policies, and procedures to align with the company's goals and competitive practices. This position is also responsible for ensuring that company compensation programs are consistently administered in compliance with internal policies and government regulations.

Essential Functions:

  • Evaluates effectiveness of existing programs, practices and processes and presents recommendations for improvements, enhancements or other changes based upon external trends and corporate objectives.
  • Collaborate with HR and business in the planning, development, implementation, and administration of compensation programs by:
  • Understanding strategies, challenges, and opportunities
  • Maintaining an in-depth knowledge of the business' organizational structure, job functions and skill requirements
  • Actively seeking market intelligence
  • Understanding compensation trends for all functional roles and providing informed compensation solutions to your HR and business partners
  • Ensuring compensation programs are administered in a fair and equitable manner supported by company policies
  • Maintains compensation data in HRIS system tables.
  • Gather, analyze, and summarize external market data and trends in consideration of the annual salary increase budget, create communication materials, and review the current salary plan ranges.
  • Provides advice to corporate staff on pay decisions, policy interpretations, and job evaluations.
  • Designs creative solutions to specific compensation-related programs and incentive plans.
  • Oversees the participation in salary surveys and monitors salary survey data to ensure corporate compensation objectives are achieved.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local compensation laws and regulations.
    Willingness to travel a must.


    Management Responsibility:

    The Compensation Manageris responsible for all employees of the Compensation Department and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of any employees within Compensation. The Compensation Manager operates under the general direction of the VP of Total Rewards.



    Education and Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in business, human resources, or related field
    • 5 - 7 years' experience in HR in mid to large-sized organizations and progressively responsible experience in broad-based employee compensation and grade/level architectures preferred.
    • At least one year of experience managing subordinates.
    • Knowledge of laws and regulations as they apply to base and incentive compensation programs, company policies, and operations.
    • SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) and certified compensation professional credentials preferred.
      Knowledge & Skills:
      • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills and ability to interpret and communicate data.
      • Ability to maintain a professional, collaborative demeanor in performing duties adhering to strict confidentiality
      • Strong proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
      • A working knowledge of HR Systems and related reporting
      • Experience in project management, equity plan administration, and development or administration of expat or global mobility programs
      • Adapt to changing priorities, meet deadlines and manage priorities in a fast-paced work environment
      • Are an objective listener who leverages compensation experience to drive creative solutions to meet business needs.
      • Knowledge of all federal, state, and local regulations and compliance requirements related to employee compensation.
      • Strong leadership and team management skills.
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
      • Strong interpersonal skills in dealing with senior management.
      • Ability to travel and work out of the Corporate Office in Rochester, NY one week a month.
