As a unit within the Division of Academic and Student Affairs, University Housing promotes the success of the whole student. With over 9,000 residents, 15 living and learning Villages, a residential curriculum, and conference operations, University Housing strives to create a preeminent residential experience. University Housing---s dedicated staff commit to serving residents, guests, and families through education, inclusion, collaboration, organizational excellence, service, and providing a sense of belonging. Essential Job Duties The Director, Residence Life has major responsibility for the leadership and management of all staff and programs that serve the needs of residents in University Housing. Responsibilities include supervision, planning, budget, facilities management, programming, and crisis and student behavior response. The Director, Residence Life is responsible for the following: Departmental Responsibilities: Serving as a member of the University Housing Executive Leadership Team Actively participating in team-oriented departmental policy and procedure development and decision-making Leading in the strategic planning for the Residence Life unit, aligning with University Housing mission, vision, and values Implementing assessment initiatives in Residence Life in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Assessment, Research, and Evaluation Serving as communication link between University Housing, staff, stakeholders, and residents. Leading and/or serving on University Housing, Division of Academic and Student Affairs, and/or campus partner committees as appropriate and needed. Serving in a public relations capacity to the University community. Engaging in professional development opportunities. Developing processes and ensure implementation within Residence Life to promote efficiency and effectiveness. Supervision: Directly supervising Assistant Directors. Providing supervision and support for indirect supervisees, including a staff of Residence Life Coordinators, Graduate Assistants, and all undergraduate student staff in Residence Life. Providing human resources support regarding performance management and employee relations issues. Area Oversight and Partnerships: Providing leadership, vision, and direction for Residence Life. Initiating, developing, and maintaining systems, with appropriate University Housing, division, and campus partners, systems to improve effectiveness and efficiency. Establishing and maintaining campus partnerships, including supporting living and learning Villages. Providing Residence Life staff with continued training and development. Crisis and Student Behavior: Providing leadership during crises. Responding onsite to emergencies as needed to support the department. Ensuring cases are adjudicated by Residence Life in a timely manner. Serving as backup support an appellate for the Assistant Director for Resident Support and Standards as needed. Residence Education and Student Development: Facilitating a residential learning environment, providing direction and support through the department---s residential curriculum Working with Assistant Directors to ensure implementation and assessment of the department---s residential curriculum Serving as course co-coordinators for ECD220 (Resident Advisor leadership course) with direct responsibility for enrollment management, serving as the course contact with the College of Education, identifying and evaluating instructors, and identifying trends or needs which impact the curriculum. Assisting the Associate Director, Residential Learning as course co-coordinator for ECD220 with curriculum design, teaching/instructional training, and curriculum integration into ongoing staff development. Collaborating with the Assistant Director for Assessment, Research, and Evaluation and Associate Director, Residential Learning to maintain ongoing assessment of recruitment and training processes within University Housing. Advising the Resident Advisor Council. Attending programs and trainings as needed. Supporting Hall/Area Councils, the Inter-Residence Council, and the National Residence Hall Honorary. Facilities Managements: Assessing the physical condition of buildings and identify small and large capital improvement plans. Assisting with managing renovations and construction projects as they are in progress. Developing and maintaining working relationships with Facilities and Housekeeping staff. Serving as a liaison with Facilities and Housekeeping staff. Inclusion: Creating and maintaining an open and inclusive community. Participating in and encouraging staff participation of on-going training related to multiculturalism. Serving as a multicultural resource for staff and residents. Administration: Providing oversight for all Residence Life operations, programming, and small capital improvement budgets. Creating, managing, and reconciling all direct budgets. Establishing and tracking goals for Residence Life. Working with staff to develop marketing tools and materials. Responding to all customer service inquiries. Other Work/Responsibilities This position requires some night and weekend work in order to support the campus community. This position is expected to serve in a Director-level on-call system for the department and may have to respond to campus to provide leadership and support during emergency situations after hours. This position is required to handle confidential information appropriately and is bound by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This position is also a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Clery Act as well as Responsible Employees under Title IX and are mandatory reporters for any crimes of incidents of sex discrimination which they are made aware. In addition to reporting, training is required for these designations. Minimum Education/Experience Master---s degree in higher education, counseling, student personnel services, student affairs administration, or other relevant field, and 5-10 years of experience in housing systems with increasing levels of responsibility. Departmental Required Skills Proactive leadership skills including strategic planning, crisis management, and organizational prioritizing; strong financial and budget management skills; Demonstrated knowledge of design and construction; and supervisory skills which inspire, motivate, and foster a culture in which all staff members are treated with respect, fairness, and professionalism and which promote professional development across all members of the team. Sensitive, diplomatic, and articulate written and verbal communication skills, as well as a deep understanding and commitment to student development principles, are highly desirable. Possess a commitment to expand knowledge and awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as evidenced through demonstrating self-awareness, understanding and valuing others, demonstrating knowledge of social inequalities, interacting effectively with a diversity of people, and fostering equity and inclusion.
