The Division of State History Museums collects and preserves artifacts and other historical materials relating to the history and heritage of North Carolina in a local, regional, national and international context to assist people in understanding how the past influences the present. The division interprets history through exhibitions, educational programs, and publications available to the visitor on-site or through distance-learning technologies.

Description of Work:
The primary purpose of this position is for the planning, administrative, and managerial work to develop, produce, and implement all museum exhibitions, educational programs, marketing activities, and historical publications for the North Carolina Museum of History, and to support the Division Director in the planning and management of the Division's regional and maritime museums. Position chairs, directs, and oversees the museum's strategic, annual, marketing, and interpretative planning by setting institutional priorities, by identifying and setting long-and short-term goals and objectives, resource needs and funding opportunities, interpretative and marketing strategies, project schedules, and staffing assignments; directs special project teams and section chiefs in the development and completion of mission-driven work that utilizes the museum collection and historical research to interpret the collection and the state's history; monitors, facilitates, and evaluates project work to ensure that the staff accomplishes strategic plans and annual goals. Oversees staff in the development, documentation, and preservation of the museum's artifact collection, ensuring that all professional standards are adhered to regarding stewardship of the museum's collection; reviews interpretative content and evaluates project work results; collaborates with other professionals and outside peer organizations to identify and utilize relevant collections and historical research to develop exhibitions, programs, publications, and to provide quality patron assistance. The person in this position must have the ability to lead staff in strategic, annual, and interpretative planning, in establishing budgetary priorities and marketing plans, in creating effect project teams, and in directing and evaluating project work. They must also have the ability to collaborate with peers, advisory boards, and focus groups in developing appropriate exhibitions and programs. The ability to make public presentations, and represent the museum in professional conferences, meetings, and events as well as possess the ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. This position will require traveling as well as evening and weekend hours.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

To qualify for this position, you must meet ALL the following KSAs listed below:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of management practices and/or experience supervising the work of others.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of standard museum practices or those of a large public facility.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of one or more of the following: collections development, exhibition development, historical interpretation, artifact conservation, design, educational programming, marketing, and/or historical writing.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of history and material cultural studies.
  • Demonstrated experience with developing programs and/or organizing projects to meet goals and deadlines.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver's License or the ability to obtain for employment.
  • Requires traveling as well as evening and weekend working hours.
    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Master's degree in History, Business Administration, Public Administration, Marketing, Management, Education, or a closely related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of progressively responsible experience in planning, directing, and managing all aspects of a business, governmental program, a museum, or a public historical program or institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
