HOW YOU WILL DO IT

As a Senior/Staff Life Sciences Mechanical Engineer at Plexus, you will be joining a team that develops innovative life sciences products, with a focus on IVD instrumentation. You will have the opportunity to work with customers across Plexus' broad life sciences development portfolio, ranging from the largest diagnostic solution providers in the world to cutting-edge startups. Within Plexus, you will collaborate with a talented multidisciplinary team to help turn ideas into products that improve the human experience.

We are looking for engineers with strong problem solving and communications skills, a background in the development of life sciences systems, and a passion for bringing innovation out of the research lab and into clinician's hands.

This challenging and rewarding role includes the following elements:

  • Brainstorm and ideate solutions to mechanical problems in life sciences systems
  • Work closely with scientific customers to understand biochemical workflows being translated into products
  • Design 3D models and 2D drawings to communicate design intent to peers, customers, and vendors
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to develop product architecture for diagnostic and other life sciences instrumentation
  • Conduct design reviews to ensure quality of design work is maintained
  • Build and test prototypes to evaluate performance against product requirements
  • Coordinate a team of engineers to achieve success in a shared mission
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance for their growth
  • Lead internal team and customer communications to ensure alignment throughout the product development cycle
  • Partner with project managers to ensure project success in terms of scope, budget and schedule
  • Lead the evaluation and improvement of processes, tools, and methodologies to ensure best practices are used throughout the functional group and the design center.
  • Collaborate with global peers to enhance execution and knowledge base.
  • Occasional travel may be required to meet the needs of the business (estimated Education/Experience Qualifications:
    • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Engineering is required
    • Ten (10) years of related experience is required; Ten (10) or more years of related experience is preferred.
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the key job accountabilities may be considered.
      Other Qualifications Considered:
      • Experience with life sciences or diagnostics systems
        • (e.g. clinical work flows, basic biochemical concepts)
        • Experience with developing and manufacturing microfluidic systems
        • Experience with developing or integrating optical systems
        • Experience with thermal solutions in the life sciences space
        • Knowledge of 3D modeling and drawing development (CAD tools)
          • (e.g. SolidWorks, Creo, NX, etc.)
          • Understanding of multiple fabrication technologies
            • (e.g. machining, injection molding, sheet metal, weldments, extrusions, etc.)
            • Experience with analytical tools for thermal and/or structural analysis
              • (e.g. SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS)
              • Understanding of kinematics and mechanism design
              • Experience with prototype building and development techniques
                • (e.g. 3D Printing, Hand Tools, Mill, Laser Cutting, etc.)
                • Evaluation and Testing experience
                • Advanced Decision Making, Problem Solving Skills
                • Advanced Verbal and Written Communications Skills
                • In-depth Cross-Discipline Development Knowledge
                • Ability to develop good working relationships with team members and customers
