The City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department, now also known as Raleigh Water, provides water and sanitary sewer services to about 198,000 metered customers and a service population of about 600,000 people in Raleigh, Garner, Wake Forest, Rolesville, Knightdale, Wendell, and Zebulon areas. Our mission is to provide safe, sustainable water services for our customers while protecting public health and contributing to the economic, environmental, and social vitality of our communities.

Our Water Distribution division is looking for a Utilities Specialist, Seniorto join our team. Utilities Specialist, Seniorsare devoted to providing repairs, preventive maintenance, utility locating, and does investigations within our water system. Utilities Specialist, Senior also performs maintenance and equipment operation for the City's distribution system by performing skilled activities in support of maintaining, replacing, and repairing water assets (i.e., services, mains, and fire hydrants, etc.).

    Parking is free! Duties and Responsibilities

    • Install's, replaces, and repairs assets such as water services, mains, fire hydrants, split services, sample stations, and auto flushers.
    • Required to work after hours on an on-call rotating repair call crew.
    • Performs semi-skilled or skilled general maintenance supporting City department(s) or maintenance function; selects proper maintenance tools and equipment for tasks; performs work following established safety policies and procedures and applicable codes and regulations.
    • Collects, prepares, and enters system data; creates work orders; logs work activities; update maps; enters account data; compiles and prepares reports; maintains records, files, and work-related documentation.
    • Plans, prioritizes, schedules, coordinates, and performs technical and specialized skilled work in providing operational, technical and maintenance support for the City's water distribution system.
    • May serve as lead worker by assigning work and monitoring work completion.
    • May participate in hiring activities and performance evaluations.
    • Monitors and ensures safe working conditions and environment; identifies potential hazards and initiates or coordinates corrective action to maintain safety; ensures availability, maintenance and operability of safety and work-related equipment; monitors processes and activities to assure quality.
    • Meets and communicates with contractors, design professionals and other stakeholders regarding construction or special projects; reads and interprets maps, charts, and technical drawings; performs or oversees utility locates; provides operational support in the coordination of project work.
    • Prepares, maintains and/or reviews reports, data, forms, permits, and/or code enforcement investigations; monitors, tracks, and maintains inventory levels; initiates ordering to replenish supply levels or purchase new items.
    • Responds to inquiries, complaints, issues, and information requests from internal and external customers; addresses and resolves problems and complaints; monitors compliance with applicable regulations, standards, policies, and procedures.
    • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned. Typical Qualifications

      Education and Experience
      High School Diploma or GED and four years of maintenance experience.


      An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.

      • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver?s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 30 days.
      • Class A (CDL) Commercial Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 45 days. Additional Information

            Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

            Heavy Work:
            Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

            Working Conditions:
            Work is performed in both the field and in an indoor office environment with moderate exposure to atmospheric conditions (such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, etc.); moderate exposure to environmental conditions (such as disruptive people, imminent danger, or a threatening environment); and frequent exposure to intense noise.
